Lightning Lanes
Learn more about Disney World's paid skip-the-line service, which options work for your family, and how to optimize Lightning Lanes without the headache.
What Is A Lightning Lane?
When you buy Lightning Lane for a day at Walt Disney World, you're in a skip-the-line service that ensures you can enjoy select rides while saving time. Before the parks shut down for a few months in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney World had a free skip-the-line system called FastPass. As parks reopened, FastPass was no longer being used. In August 2021, Disney announced that FastPass was officially being replaced by a paid servcie called Genie Plus and Individual Lightning Lanes. In July 2024, to streamline the service, the name was changed to Lightning Lanes. Guests could purchase single individual Lightning Lanes as well as multiple Lightning Lanes as a part of the service. A few months later, Lightning Lane Premier Pass was introduced for guests who wanted to ride all the rides with ease.
What Are the Different Types of Lightning Lane Options?
There are 3 types of Lightning Lane options: Lightning Lane Single Pass, Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and Lightning Lane Premier Pass.

Lightning Lane Single Pass allows you access to the skip-the-line for one attraction. You can purchase up to 2 Single Passes for one park day. You can also purchase two Single Passes in different parks if you have a Park Hopper ticket.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass allows you access to the skip-the-line to most attractions in each park. You can have up to 3 Lightning Lanes at one time. Once you use one, you can book another. You can also book Lightning Lanes in another park if you have a Park Hopper ticket once you use your first Lightning Lane in the park that you purchased.

Lightning Lane Premier Pass allows you access to the skip-the-line for all Lightning Lane attractions one time each. You can only purchase Premier Pass for one park.
How Much Do Lightning Lanes Cost?
Lightning Lanes do not have a fixed price. Costs are determined by estimated demand, so prices will be higher during more popular times of the year: Three day holiday weekends, spring break weeks, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. The prices are also different between parks:

Which Lightning Lane Option Is Right For Me?
Unless spending hundreds to thousands of dollars on Lightning Lane Premier Pass every day is a drop in the bucket, I would recommend most people spend their money on Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass. I especially recommend this to people with young children whose priority is going to minimize standing in lines. This is also a helpful service to anyone who travels during busier times of the year such as holidays and spring breaks.
How Does Lightning Lane Multi Pass Work?
Guests can purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass on the My Disney Experience App 3 days before their park day or 7 days before check-in day at a Walt Disney World Resort for the entirety of their stay. During the purchasing process, guests have the chance to select up to 3 Lightning Lane attractions with time slots.

The one thing that is important to know ahead of time is that there are two tiers of rides in Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios. Tier 1 Lightning Lanes are the more popular attractions and guests can only choose one when purchasing. There are more choices for Tier 2 Lightning Lanes. Animal Kingdom does not have tiers for their Lightning Lanes, so guests can pick any three that are available.

How Can I Ride Everything with Multi Pass?
If you're someone who is determined to ride all the main attractions on your park day, then it is possible to ride everything even if you're willing to wait in the standby queue. Here are some tips to consider if you want to hit all the attractions in each of the parks:

1. Early Entry is an opportunity to take on some of the attractions before official park opening. If you are a Walt Disney World Resort guest or are staying at one of these partnering hotels, then you can take advantage of being in the park 30 minutes before the park opens to everyone. Keep in mind, that you need to be leaving your resort 60-90 minutes before Early Entry begins if you really want to get in a main attraction or two in those 30 minutes.

2. Schedule your first Tier 1 attraction as early in the day as you can. As soon as you finish the ride, you can book another Lightning Lane for another Tier 1 attraction.

3. Consider standing in a standby queue in one of the lines. If Lightning Lanes run out for a Tier 1 attraction, get in the standby line earlier in the day or later in the evening towards closing. If you don't mind missing a nighttime show, riding an attraction during those times should be lower.

4. Take advantage of Extended Evening Hours if you are staying at a Deluxe Walt Disney World Resort or one of these partnering hotels. During the week, there are two parks that stay open two hours after official park close.

5. Purchase Lightning Lane Single Pass(es) along with the Multi Pass. This way, you can focus on the Tier 1 attractions under the Multi Pass.

6. Treat finding a Lightning Lane availability like a game. Get everyone in your traveling group who has the My Disney Experience App to race who can get the Lightning Lane first during down time (breaks, standing in queues, etc.)
